Web Directories

by Liani Liebenberg on March 26th, 2009 | Posted in Revium Blog | Comment on this entry

This week we were given the task to list our website in a web directory and it prompted my investigation into what is it and how they work.  My investigation led me to web directories such as:

Yahoo! Directory

Yahoo Directory

Open Directory Project (aka DMoz or ODP)

dmoz

World Wide Web Virtual Library (VLIB)

vlib

The sole functions of ‘Web Directories’ or ‘link directories’ are that they link web sites together and group them into categories and subcategories.  Unlike search engines the categorisation is not based on keywords but rather on the whole web site.  As a site owner or administration you can submit a request to a web directory to have your website listed in exchange for a fee or a reciprocal link back to the web directory.

Today, submission of websites to web directories is considered as a common SEO (search engine optimization) technique since they establish vital back-links for the submitted web site.
