You may have heard that Google has recently changed their algorithm.
This is nothing new as Google often changes its ranking algorithm as much as 10 times a week. A lot of these updates are not major ones that will see your site falling down the rankings. This is just Googles way of cleaning up the Internet and with Googles CEO saying “Brands are the solution, not the problem. Brands are how you sort out the cesspool,” you can take it that Google will and always have favored sites that give the user the best experience and information, not just trying to make money out of them.
There are theories going around that the recent influx of spammy sites has forced Google to change their algorithm. This may be true but with most things Google, they are keeping it close to their chest.
With all this in mind how can you stop future algorithm changes affecting your website?
Well the bad news is you can’t. There’s some good news too. The way Google is setup you can see what they are patenting at any time. This won’t give you their algorithm but will give you a high level of what they aim to do with their algorithm changes.
Another great way for your site to minimize the affect of a Google algorithm change is to apply an adaptive SEO strategy. One simple adaptive SEO strategy is to constantly monitor sites which are achieving top rankings in Google and see what they are doing with regards to Keyword density , h1 tags and all the other usual suspects.
One tip I can give you is that Google will never give you an accurate list of backlinks to a site as this will give you the power to find out how their algorithm is ranking sites. Instead use Yahoo or Bing to look at back links. This should give you an accurate list of all backlinks to a site but the question is which ones does Google count?
This is the million dollar question that all SEO professionals want to know. There is a lot of theories about what the Google algorithm counts as a back link but that’s all they are, theories!
